I have a laptop and I recently tried to reformat with the crappy burnt recovery discs that best buy provided (for $50 extra no less) and they kept failing. So I installed my desktop copy of windows xp on it and now all I have are normal mouse properties, not the ones for the touch pad. Is there any way to get these back? Or something similar, because its crazy sensitive and super annoying

Look for the driver, your recovery disk holds the driver but since you used another installation of Windows you'll have to find it at the manufacture of the laptop website.

It's most likely synaptic touchpad right? What's the brand and model of the laptop?

Compaq Presario V5000 I tried looking on their site but all I found was audio, network, video drivers. That sorta thing. Nothing for touch pad.
