Default index.dat

I know that deleting index.dat using either programs or going into DOS
and clearing it will make it so that nobody can view what internet sites you have been to; but I have also heard there are ways to get around this. Are there any ways to clear it so that you cannot go through and look? And if so, any way to do it and not make it obvious?
