Default I386

I'm a bit confused about the I386 folder. What exactly does it contain, and how would I make use of it? Can I use it instead of reinstalling xp?
Thanks

The i386 folder is contained on a Windows installation disc, and contains all the necessary files to perform an installation of Microsoft Windows.

Is this in any way preferable to reinstalling from the cd?

Not really. Only preferable when you do not have the cd.

Preferred method is to slipstream updates and drivers using nlite.

Is it possible to add updates to the I386 folder? Also if i have the xp Cd but it came with a different computer (both the same manufacturer) can I use it to reinstall so long as I put in the right key?
