Default I need to wipe a hard drive

I was just wondering if there was any good freeware to completely clean a drive of all data, in such a way that I would feel comfortable selling it on ebay to user "I-data-mine-drives".

... and on a side note, that peaks my curiosity. Is there any useful utilities for scanning 'deleted' drives for potentially useful data?

This one is pretty good, and they have a free version too.

Active@ Kill Disk Hard Drive Eraser. Low Level Format.

After research, I've decided to go with the Gutmann method of a wipe using Darik's Boot and Nuke. I won't be able to do the wipe for a few days (friend's drive), but I'm hoping all goes well. My second question still applies, as I would like to try to mine data before and after the wipe, to see the results.

Here is the link to Darik's Boot and Nuke if anyone else was interested:

Is that legal?

Norton?
McAffee?

Seems like it has several 'pay' programs.
