Default I need help with transferring files

I had to reformat so I put the files on another computers main hard drive by putting the second computer's drive in the first computer. The files are readable on that hdd but when I reverse the process to put them back on the original hard drive the files are unreadable. All the file names are a bunch of squares and don't show the correct size. Both computers are WinXP with NTFS.

Whats wrong and how do I fix it?

Did you encrypt them? Using EFS yields that result. If you could post a screenshot for us to see, but I think I know what you're talking about, about those squares as file name, that usually indicates corruption or encryption.
