| *HELP* Vista x64 Should I install? My specs incl. Hey everyone. Im looking for some input. Any would help.
Im considering installing Vista x64 on my system.
I currently am running XP sp2, Ive had Vista 32 bit on it before, ran fine.
However my vid cards are NOT divx 10, they are divX 9c
My specs include:
AMD Opteron Dual Core 175
SLi dual Nvidia 6600GT's
2 GB RAM overclocked.
I have an Asus A8N Deluxe Motherboard.
My system runs great, both with XP and Vista 32bit. Even though im running SLi (2 vidcards) and have a great amount of memory. Should I bother with 64 bit Vista, 32 bit Vista, or stick with XP.
Thanks! |

Vista does not support Sli yet. Thank nVidia for not getting their drivers running right on that one. So if you want SLi on Vista you better wait a bit longer.
Cheers,
Mak

Cheers,
Mak | Thanks for replying Mark, but your incorrect.
Beta drivers were released awhile ago that allow SLi to work on Vista. The drivers work fine. (at least they did when I trial'd 32bit)
So that out of the way. Again i ask.
With SLi running 2 6600GT's again that both run at Divx9c
But 2GB of overclocked ram and Dual Core.
Should I run 64 bit VISTA or no? |

| Re: *HELP* Vista x64 Should I install? My specs incl. Hello,
Beta drivers are buggy at best and can cause system instability and manymore issues with your system. Which is why i did not suggest to use them. I know what i am talking about when it comes to Windows. I am known as the Windows Geek here. I am also a MVP for Windows Desktop Experience. So i do have a clue as to what i am saying.
If you wish to act this way and disregard my advice fine. I jsut wont help. But i will tell you now that running the beta drivers can and will give you problems. I know as i have run those drivers myself and had BSOD issues with them.
Plus it is not Divx9. It is DirectX9. Divx is a Video codec and video player. Also i go by Mak. Not Mark.
As for should you. That is up to you. Read all the threads in regards to Vista and make the decision if you wish to upgrade. We can not tell you to run Vista as you may not like it. It is a personal preference which OS you run. It is not our decision which OS you should run.
With that said. Have a good day.
Cheers,
Mak

Your right the beta drivers are a bit buggy, but I recall having it run pretty smooth all in all on 32bit.
my only concern is 64bit giving me a pletha of new issues. I have a disk of Ultimate vista x64 Sp1 obtained from work so i was curious if it was worth the jump. Ill reconsider.
One last question though, if I do test it out. Would it be advised to drop my Dual 6600GT's for slightly better vid cards that run on Directx10?
If so can anyone recommend decent ones that have relatively cheapened now in the market.
All this computer really is used for is WoW these days anyway. And probably Halo Wars when it comes out |

The Beta drivers do run smoothly but not all the time. They will crash if you use them for gaming.
With the market the way it is you can get yourself a 9800GX2 or a 8800GTX card which can perform jsut as well as your SLi setup.
But DX10 is not fully worth it yet as there are few games that run it. Those that do can also run DX9 as well. DX10 will not be sufficent for at least another year and even then who knows since they have already announced DX11.
For the system you have there will be no benefit to jump to Vista. If you have XP running fast and smooth you will probably be upset with the way Vista performs and regret the decision. Vista runs good on 2GB but with 64 Bit you really should run more.
Cheers,
Mak

| Re: *HELP* Vista x64 Should I install? My specs incl. Since when does SLI not work on Vista? I've seen many MANY systems running SLI on Vista Home Premium (unless you were only referring to 64bit Vista and SLI). I've actually never even heard of SLI issues with Vista up until this point. I may not be Microsoft MVP, but I've been around many gaming forums and the like with many rigs that are capable of this. Not to mention many custom builders (iBuyPower and the like) offer SLI rigs with Vista. Perhaps I missed something and I'm sorry if I did. :s |

| Re: *HELP* Vista x64 Should I install? My specs incl. Surge,
It wasnt until recently that the nvidia driver for Vista offered SLi. Their first batch came in Jan. Those were buggy as could be. They have since modified them but they still do not work as well as they do in XP.
I know several people that have many, many issues trying to run SLi in Vista. Not jsut 64 Bit either. But 32 Bit as well.
It could be that i am wrong and the newer sets do run SLi easily. But from my talks with everyone i know that runs SLi in Vista they complain of drivers crashes almost daily. Along with BSOD's on a regular basis. So while SLi may work. I have not seen it stable. Many times people have removed a card or disabled SLi to use Vista.
I have also seen and heard that Vista doesnt support 2 different types of video cards as well. Some of this may be outdated but as of at least June i know that many of these issues were still present on many machines. Espically gamers.
I have heard that 64 Bit Vista is much better than 32 Bit and is recommended by many of my friends. So it could work. I jsut caution people cause it may not work as they expect and give issues. Vista already has a bad rep that it doesnt deserve from manufacturer's not getting things done right for it. Last thing we need is a influx of more peopel coming by and complaining that Vista doesnt run their SLi like they want.
I amy be wrong. But i am going by my experience with SLi and VIsta. It could be that those machines are running a modded driver as i haev seen and heard that these are better than the default nVidia ones. So that could be a very good option.
Cheers,
Mak

| Re: *HELP* Vista x64 Should I install? My specs incl. It is just the opposite for me. I have heard to much of it. I do hope that i am wrong as i think Vista is good and think people should try it out.
Cheers,
