Default Help me clear something up please(Fresh install of xp type question)

Right i havent got a xp disc as it was preinstalled when i bought the pc years ago, anyway i thought about buying xp really cheap(the OEM version), now my question is if i installed it would i be able to install xp and keep all my programmes and the contents of my documents folder or would ALL of this be totally wiped leaving me just with xp and nothing else?

I feel this is abit of a stupid question but im not 100% of the answer so thought id ask

Unless you do a repair, the XP install requires a formated harddrive which means everything will be gone.
