ok so it looks like my friend has a Virus on his computer. Its a Gateway GT5220 desktop. It won't load into windows, and it just kicks you back to the user select screen.

What can I do to fix the problem and get back into windows? do I need to make a boot disk? He doesn't have any windows CD's or anything. Do I need to download some files

any help is greatly appreciated, thanks !

Can you get into Safe Mode ?

Theres a few livecds that can be used to scan, I did a quick google search and found Dr.Web, got good reviews.

So so you have the when you log in it immediately logs off. and if you log in again it just logs you off again using windows xp?


If so it is most likely a problem with WSAUPDATER.EXE.

yeah thats what happens. How should I go about fixing it?

AFAIK there is no option to start the computer in safe mode.

You cannot log on to Windows XP after you remove Wsaupdater.exe

To get into safe mode press f8 after post to put up the boot options list which will allow you to boot into safe mode.
