Default Help with DVD player Plz!!

Hi, I have some questions regarding my new DVD player that i need help with.

I have just bought a new DVD player because my old one was messed up. Now, everything set up fine. The problem is it seems like the DVD player can NOT read anything except DVD or VCD. Now I have alot of stuff/movies that I burn them as MPEG-1 form which worked fine with my old DVD player. Is there any way that I can watch it in MPEG-1 format with this new player? If not, I suppose I have to convert everything to VCD and what would be the best software to do that? Most the movies I have are in avi form, some I have converted to MPEG-1 form. Should I let Nero do all the work?

And what should I look for if I want a DVD player that can read MPEG-1 format files? The one I bought had DVD/VCR/VCD combo on cover, but doesn't work for MPEG-1.

And what type of format is VCD in? MPEG1, 2, 3, 4?

Thanks!!!
