Default Hard Drive running all the time

I have XP, when I boot normally, my hard drive is running all the time. When I start XP it takes 20 mins to start, whenever I start a new program it take a long time to start, but once it started it runs fine.
This started about a week ago, since then I have scanned for spyware and virus, with several programs. I found minor stuff but nothing that solved the problem. I also replaced my hard drive with no difference.
With Process Explorer it show system idle process around 70%
Also when I start in safe mode the system seems to work ok.

My system specs
XP sp 2
AMD 3200
3 gig ram
500 gig hd

Thanks for any help!

Open up Task Manager and see what is hogging the CPU. Right click on the taskbar and choose Task Manager from the menu, then click on the processes tab.

Hijack logs are not my thing (but there are several here who may jump in), but it looks like you have a buttload of stuff running. Go into MSCONFIG and uncheck everything you can live without (you can always launch it later). Reboot and see if that helps.

Run > "msconfig" > Startup tab

I know its a lot of things running but it was working correctly last week with all of this running, so something had to change.

Also I have done a full virus scan using zonealarm and found nothing.

Good luck

The only norton product I am running is Norton Ghost, and it was installed after the problem started, and I have uninstalled it.
