Default Getting Info off with a live CD

My friends OS is completely messed up, we can't log in or anything. Is there a way i can throw in a live CD and get everything off via USB? i tried ubuntu but it didn't work.

How didn't it work.

You should be able to 'try the OS' option at the Ubuntu start screen - then basic drivers like USB are loaded. Then pull the information off.

Not sure what totally messed up is, but have you tried repairing the install?

Lex is right. It should just boot to the liveCD jsut fine. IF it doesnt then there is more wrong with the PC.

no it booted fine to ubuntu, when i got in i could view the folders in C: but i couldn't see what was in any of the sub-folders.

You have to mount the drive. Search Google and the Ubuntu Forums. It will tell you how to mount the drive so that you can get the data off of there.

use a bart pe or windows pe cd
