i would not put an OS on a flash drive, the constant read/write access required by an OS would kill it

Flash drives always could have been bootable if your BIOS supports it. The only OS designed for USB that I know OS I know of though is **** Small Linux currently.
there are other linux distros designed to boot from flash drive. Puppy is one
