you need to reformat the drive to convert from FAT32 to NTFS. i recomend backing up all of the imporntant data and reformatting to NTFS.

How to convert a FAT16 volume or a FAT32 volume to an NTFS file system in Windows XP

A format is not necessary. Windows XP has tools which can change the File System without causing damage to your setup.

ohh, cool. i was under the impression that a reformat was needed. are there any cons to doing it this way?

FAT32 is a insecure file system. As well as having a file size limit of 4GB. So if you are going to download a file that is larger than that and you have the FAT32 File system the PC will give you errors.

This has nothing to do with Microsoft. This is a common error that everyone can make.

No. I have converted several system from Fat32 to NTFS going thru the command line route and never had any ill effect when it was finished.

NTFS is a more secure file system, and you can transfer files over 4GB to NTFS (can't be done on Fat32). Those are just a few advantages.

So,it can be done without losing anything, right? My friend is a Senior and gets upset fast and he does NOT want to go through this formatting again or lose anything as in programs/settings,drivers installed, etc.

Yes, you won't have to format. Just follow the link that Mak gave.
