Default external USB HDD, slow (1 MB/s) transfer speeds. NEW COMPUTER

i just had a new computer built, asus p5ql pro mobo, 2.83 intel quad core processor, running xp sp3, and i bought an extrnal HDD that connects via USB to back up all my drives, but ****, the files are only transferring at 1 MB/s. transferring files from one internal HDD to another goes about 40 MB/s. i know the speed is limited by the USB but shouldn't it be faster than that?

Is the external hard drive USB 2.0, and if it is, are you sure you have installed your mobo's USB drivers?

yes it's 2.0, and as for the drivers, i didn't install anything specific to usb when i set this comp up last week, but the usb ports all work so doesn't that mean it has the necessary drivers already?

Well it can depend on what OS you're running, but sometimes you need to install USB 2.0 drivers. Go to the Device Manager (in XP+Vista, it's windowskey+pause/break) and see if there are any yellow question mark categories, if not then see if your USB drivers are there.
