| external drive and vista Hi guys,
I am new here and I was hoping to get some help. I just bought a 160 gb external HD and I was wondering what I need to do to get vista OS on this drive. I have an internal drive with XP Pro on it already. If someone could give me a step by step instructions on how to do this I would appreciate it greatly.
thanks |

| Re: external drive and vista Really difficult to do. Windows (XP/Vista) does NOT like installation of their OS on an external drive (connected VIA USB).
There are ways around this, but it my reading (haven't done it yet) it is a pain in the arse. Google it an you'll find a few posts of people saying they've done it, but it was no easy task. |

| Re: external drive and vista Vista is not created to be installed on external media. the hacks out there are use at your own risk.

| Re: external drive and vista Well if that is the case, could I use acronis true image home 12 and click on "one click protection" will that backup my complete OS, drivers, firefox+extensions+shortcuts? In other words a complete snapshot of my system. I ask because if I wipe out my current system (XP) and then install vista and I don't like it, I just have to restore using acronis and my system will be as it was?
thanks |

| Re: external drive and vista Yes that would be a perfectly good alternative.

| Re: external drive and vista You could run it on a virtual machine, read up on them here: Virtual machine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If you want to do that you can put the virtual machine hard disks on your external drive. It's great fun

| Re: external drive and vista most external HDs can backup your internal by creating an exact copy of it, my western digital has that feature but i never used it.
my external can use both USB and SATA, maybe if you had a SATA external you can hook it up to your mobo? (this idea just came up in my head)

(this idea just came up in my head) | That only depends on if the drive comes with backup software on it to do that...not all drives do...you can still use it as a normal hard drive regardless anyway.
eSATA and SATA aren't the same. Won't work.
