error try to load xp

have a new laptop without os..i'm trying to formatt and put xp on it..so i have a few questions..it has an 80 gig hard drive...
1)how much should i partition out to xp
2) should i go ntfs or fat and whats the difference..
3)i'm getting this error messege can some one tell me what i'm doing wrong or what cause it

manifest parse error: invalid at the top level of document

thanks for the quick response..the cd i used was a copied version..and a friend said it might be due to being a burnt cd that would also cause that specific error although i didn't see it listed on that link
