does anyone know of a cpu temp monitoring program that is free?

Well since you have a Dell Inspirion...try FanGUI. It was originally made for the 8300, but it works on my 5100. It monitors CPU temps, HDD temp, CPU load, fan speeds, allows you to control fan speeds, etc. You might have to flash the BIOS though if It doesn't read the temp correctly.
