Default Computer Won't Start

My friend has windows vista and he says that his laptop was working all day long until he took a nap then woke up and the computer won't start.

Its stuck in the screen with the HP Invent Logo.

What should i do?

p.s. - i can't press or boot into anyting (such as pressing the f1-12 keys)...

So what happened between the time he went for a nap and now? Did he shut down the computer? Did he leave it on and let the battery die out? Did he leave it on and have the hibernation settings kick in for low power standby? Did he try a power outlet and see if that helped? Did he try to restart it?

"it was plugged in, he closed the lid"

I'm thinking harddrive failure what are your thoughts? even if i tried to reformat it, it wouldn't be able to because it won't change the boot order...

Can he get into the BIOS? If not then there is a more serious problem and it isnt the hard drive. Could be a dead mobo. Would have to rip apart the laptop to clear the CMOS.

Check up all connections. IF everything is OK, bring your motherboard to the service centre.

Being a laptop get a RMA. Opening it up will void the warranty. There is something else wrong beyond the hard drive.
