Default Re: Computer setup problems

One suggestion given to someone else who was having similar problems (though it did not fix it entirely for him) was to download swissknife program and format it that way to nfts. But as I'm looking at the partitions it looks like its already done correctly as far as I can tell, because as I click on each partition, at the bottom there is a little note if the install is not going to work on that partition. For example the first partition says the recommended free space for installation is 11752 MB. The last partition (MEDIADIRECT) says:

Windows cannot be installed on this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.

Then the middle partition (Disk 0 Partition 3) doesn't have any note and just tells you to click next. So I'm assuming that partition (which has plenty of space on it (136.5 GB) is the one that I use and is ready to go. Yet when I start to install it, during the Copying Windows phase at (0%) it comes up with the error message:

"Windows Setup could not reinitialize the deployment engine. To install Windows, restart the installation." But restarting the installation just gives the same results...

I don't think it will work for me, but I've read some places that one might try to install windows xp on a formatted drive and then upgrade to vista? I don't know much about computers so this might not even be possible, I just thought I read that on some sites this morning.

No, what Makaveli was saying is that if you're reinstalling, you need to actually reformat your partitions/drive, in NTFS. Reinstalling over old partitions is a bad idea. Yes, they could have Vista installed on them, but that would defeat the purpose of doing a complete reinstall...

When you're at the stage where it shows the different partitions and where you want to install, you want to delete the partitions (if you don't have anything you want backed up on them). There should be something on the bottom of the screen telling you what button to press to delete the partition(s). I don't remember what it is in Vista. But after you've selected to delete them, format them in NTFS.

okay so delete the partitions and then format them to ntfs. Before I delete them I want to make sure I know what I am doing. So when I delete them, how do I set the partitions up again? and how do I format them correctly if it is different from what I have tried already? thanks.

also do I delete all the partitions or just the one I want to install on? Because there is a third partition that says MEDIADIRECT on it with a total size of 2.5 GB and total free space of 1.9 GB. I'm assuming there's something on there, do I need it?

Okay we are getting this way to confused. Get GParted.

Mirrors

Download and burn the ISO with ImgBurn:

Burning ISO Images with ImgBurn - Guides - NeoSmart Technologies Wiki

Frm there load up GParted with the CD in your tray. It is a bootable D. From there select the partition you want to install to. Right click on that partiiton and you will see the format option. Choose the NTFS option and format the drive. Then restart with the Vista DVD in the Tray.

Go thru the boot process. It should now work.

The issue you are having is related to teh format. Vista does not do a full format it does jsut a quick where it erases teh data. The problem is that you have a corrupted spot on teh hard drive which is causing this issue.

Doing this will get rid of that spot and allow for a install to complete.

okay. first question, and this applies to the rest of the post as well. This I'm sure is elementary, but do I do this on a different computer, with internet access? Do I save it to a disk, or flash drive or something and then plug that into the laptop?

Same as above, and how do I access them on the laptop once I do that?

So, download the above program(s) to a cd, then put it in the laptop's cd/dvd drive?

maybe I should, but I ordered it online and wanted to see if I could fix it before mailing it back and waiting to order a new one which would take longer than something that could potentially be fixed.
