Exclamation Computer Got shut off during disk defrag

Last night I was running a disk defrag it was about 70% done but then we lost power causing the computer to be shut down in the middle of a disk degfrag. Everything seems to be working fine but What could have happened because the computer was shut down 3/4 of the way through a disk defrag?

Hello,

Some files might have gotten corrupted. Some files associated with some applications might not be found when you go to run them as the defrag could have been in the process of moving them when the power went out.

Best option, check every application. Make sure they work. If they do you are alright.

Cheers,
Mak

Agreed, you should be fine. While there may have been a stray file here or there that may have gotten lost, i doubt it. The main thing is that the mbr (master boot record) is in tact for the OS to know where all of the files are, so even if it didn't finish moving a file, it still knows where those files are located. The mbr is the green area and never gets moved on the disk.

Yea, data is copied rather than moved in any defragging operation, so the major key to losing power when defragging is losing "where the file is" rather than losing the data itself.
