Default Cmd terminal won't change to other drive

I can't make any other drive the current work directory.
I type:
CD /G
and it returns:
The system cannot find the path specified.
CHDIR /G
CD \G
CHDIR \G
These all have the same result.

What button did I hit that sent the post? I wasn't finished.
HELP CD says those commands should work.
Alternatively, is there a way to start the terminal in my other drive?

I thought I had to cd or chdir, then I didn't recognize the command prompt in your instructions and included that. Just too simple I guess. I used to work on unix and you could back up all the way to root.
Thanks for the help.
