Try using a different type of controller and see if you get the same problem, if you do might have some type of malware, trojan or virus we can't know for sure if you can't tell us.
I recommend trying avast free edition or microsoft essentials to see what you might have.

Windows XP Home Service Pack 2.
I know it's not the controller because the computer still keys in "#255" when the controller is unplugged.
I have not updated my firmware yet, how do I do this and what exactly would this accomplish?
