Question Cannot open folders in same window / AutoPlay doesn't work

Hi guys,

I have been browsing around for certain fixes to the following 2 issues that I have on my desktop which is currently running Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium version.

- I am not able to open folders in same windows, while browsing in explorer. For example when I double click the my pictures folder, a new window comes up to show the contents, and soon, I have 1000 windows open at the same time. And yes - Open each folder in SAME window is TICKED from folder options.

- I insert a DVD, and AutoPlay no longer comes up. I restored the options to default but it still refuses to show up. When I go to my computer and right click the DVD, Explore and Open options are available, AutoPlay or Open With options are gone. Currently, I cannot watch this DVD.

Please help,

Daniel

Scan with Osiris's Guide. The first issue is something that would only affect you if your infected with something.

The 2nd one have you gone under the Start>Default Programs area and changed the AutoPlay options?

If so then you are most certainly infected cause that is also spyware related.

Thanks guys,

I'm going to try the guide and I'll let you know how things work out. I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 on my PC atm so im scanning with that, seems it found a few things, any comments about kaspersky? Is there any other software I can use along with kaspersky to have a little extra layer of security?

Will post with results soon,

Thanks

All of the programs in Osiris guide will help you with added security.

when you are finished and have done your hijckthis log make sure and post it here HijackThis Logs (analyze) - Computer Forums so Osiris can analyze it for you.

Hi again,

Ok so I've got my HJT log analyzed by osiris, he told me to remove one thing, and after doing that, and a few other instructions he gave me, restarting the computer, setting all settings from folder options & autoplay back to default, restarting once more, I still have the same problem...

Any further advice?
As I said I've been looking around on google and none of the solutions have worked for me so far.

EDIT: Ok now this is really starting to get on my nerves. I've been trying some new registry fixes that I found around and even those don't work. I found a program called WinBubble, and that didn't do that job either. PLEASE someone help me?? I am really mad about this!! One more problem has been added to my issues, here is a summary of what is annoying me atm:

- Open folder in same window setting doesn't work, each folder I double click on is opened in a new window (I can only open them in the same window if I right click-> explore)

- AutoPlay doesn't work. If a CD / DVD is inserted, I can't even double click and begin playing it manually, it just ''explore''s the DVD, which shows up folders and files inside it. I can't play DVDs atm.

- New problem: If I insert an external storage device (my usb, for example), when I go to My Computer to open it (since AutoPlay isn't functioning) If I double click it, this message comes up: F:\ Application not found!. I right click it and the first bolded option is Install or run program. If I chose the 2nd or 3rd options (Explore / Open) then it gets into the USB and I can access my files.

PLEASE Someone help!!

Why does everyone think Google has all the answers? Google DOES NOT spider Microsoft sites. So you wont find your answer to Windows Questions on Google unless you find a topic like this on google already spidered. You seriously need to use Live Search.

Have you used a Restore point to a time when it did open Windows when you wanted?

FIX: Open each folder in the same window

Have you tried that? Is says XP but some say it does work in Vista.

Try to create a new User and see if it persists. Would be a Corrupt Profile if it does not.

Which could also lead to your answer for the AutoPlay as well.

Fortunately, Microsoft is not the only source of wisdom on the internet.

For instance, here is a WONDERFUL writeup of things to check before assuming that you have a virus:

AutoPlay/AutoRun Not Working or Missing Not Open in Windows Vista My Digital Life

Thanks for the links, Mak and SparkMonkey. However, I've been to them before and I've tried those ''solutions'' and I've got nothing.

As you suggested, Mak, I tried creating a new user account, and I went onto there. All of the problems are continuing there, except for the fact that on the new account, when I right click the Flash Drive, The first bolded option is Open, and the next Explore (so double clicking on the flash drive opens the contents), whereas on my normal account, the first bolded option is Install or Run Program, which clicking (or double clicking the flash drive itself) leads to the error message saying F:\ Application not found! - thus I need to right click and chose explore to view its contents.

The AutoPlay and Folder options are the same, but neither of them work, as with my original account. The attachments show the only difference between the two accounts.

I'm wondering if WinRAR has anything to do with it... we run XP here and I have noticed that autorun.inf files no longer do all their functions. We had previously explored doing the HKEY mod to change that, but we decided not to.

I wrote an autorun.inf file yesterday which was set to change the icon AND run the program. It changed the icon but didn't run the program.

Try the same for you... put a little inf file on there to change the icon (I was using portable firefox) and try to run the app... if the icon changes but the app doesn't run then it's got to be a regedit thing going on.
