Thanks for the info, Thats exactly what the dell tech did for me all i had to do was insert the disc's

As I cannot get any security downloads on this comp is there a way of downloading them from another comp using a memory stick

You could but you would have to search the KB articles on Mircosoft.com for them individually.

Contacted Microsoft free virus support, they installed IE7 this has cured the problem
it was the con flicker virus that stopped IE6 from accessing there web sit for downloads
They are now offering a quarter of a mil dollars for the conviction of the perpetrator of the virus
