that was my conclusion but i wanted another opinion since it is not my computer i'm fixing. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.

Try running Spinrite on it, if you have time to spare. Can check the drive and/or attempt to fix it. But if its on the verge of failing...I wouldn't try it, and its very strenuous on the drive. If you're gonna try it, back everything up then do it. I've used it before to get into a previously unbootable system.

yes this is better than disk doctor. but I'd check the ram before I attempt any of that

thanks i'll try that i will have to purchase it so it waits till i get paid. Any freeware utility equivalent to it? Not trying to be cheap just trying to get things working

That's a ram diagnostic. I have this on the ultimate boot disk. Not sure that will help but i'll run it anyway to test for bad ram.
