Default auto disable/enable sound

Ive got a server hooked up to an intercom system that plays audio at given times during the day. I have already worked out the audio part with scheduled tasks but what I want to do now is to get a way where the machine automatically disables audio when its not playing and re-enable it while it is playing.

does anyone know how to do this?
