Question 51 processes running under task manager too many?

Hi

(OS Vista 32)

I checked my task manager and noticed that under the performance tab, it listed that I had 51 processes running. I hit the processes tab/show processes for all users and noticed there is a button there that says end process. I have not done anything yet because I don't want to terminate something that's critical, but that button if I were to press it, does it terminate the process just until a reboot is performed, or will that process stay killed, and if that's the case, how do I get the process to restart again?

Are 51 processes too many and could these processes be eating up my memory because I run slow sometimes yet I have 4g of ram?

Thanks

Thats normal. I'm on Win7 and have 63 at the moment

What you need to check is start, run, type msconfig, press enter, go to the Startup tab and click disable all, then recheck your antivirus or any other program that you really need to startup, then click ok and reboot. Even with 4GB of ram you should be fine but 4GB or not, there is no reason to have them there.

As Osiris said. Having 51 processes is not to much. I have hit almost 90 processes and still experienced no slowdown. I would look to other factors.

Default

I did that under msconfig with the ones that I was sure were ok to kill. I had 21, but got it down to 8 and 5 of them are Intel. I'm not sure if it's ok to kill the Intel stuff because that's what my moboard and gpu are running on. I'm afraid if I stop one of these from starting, something critical will occur.

Out of the Intel stuff 3 of them are common user interface programs running in the windows/system folder32 they are: igfxpers.exe/igfxtray.exe/hkcmd.exe

Any idea if I can dump these?

What other factors would cause this, could it be Firefox taking too much memory?
I looked under task manager/performance/resource monitor/memory and Firefox is using the most.

Could the problem be linked directly to Firefox because it seems like the more stuff I view in Firefox (multi-tabs open/watch videos) the amount of free physical memory drops.

Yes the problem can be directly linked to Firefox. Firefox is known for having a Memory Leak. Even that latest build of FF has it. While it is much harder for it to happen, it still does.

But the truth is this. It doesnt matter the browser, it doesnt matter the processes. If you have 50 tabs open and 49 of them are flash based sites or sites like YouTube that do videos, you will eat more memory cause more is needed to keep those pages loaded and running.

Man, I'm packing 96 processes and running 1 folding core and still have no issues, and still have 58% free memmory.

No slow downs, not even a hiccup.

I have experienced this to some extent. It cleared up after I rebooted. I was wondering if there was a way I could clear out the memory without the reboot.

You would need to shut down firefox and make sure it isnt listed in the Task Manager.
