That's for a 1 yr license. Discreet is very diligent about protecting their products.
But 3DS Max may actually be much more than your really need at this stage of your 3d career.
There are some cheaper alternatives to the full 3DS Max package that will give you decent modeling capabilities - at a much lower price.
