Laptop CD/DVD drive

Is it possible to hook up a laptop (HP) cd/dvd burner to a desktop.

I have an extra drive from my laptop and my desktop drive isn't working well.

You sure can. There are also USB and Firewire enclosures.

i was wondering if thers a cable that you could plug into the drive and the usb.
basically use it as an external cd/dvd drive

Bytecc makes such USB cables for 3.5" and 5.25" drives. It includes the 5/12 volt power supply. The problem with slimline drives is that they are powered through the interface connector. A USB port just doesn't have enough power to run a DVD burner. So an external or internal enclosure is the most reliable way to operate a slimline drive
