Default Wireless N

If I buy a new laptop (dell xps) and the only info about the wireless configuration is

"Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card "

or

"Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card "

will it necessarily be compatible with b/g networks as well?

Yes. Wireless N is backwards compatible with b/g networks as well.
