Default SATA HD crash - recovery

Hello All,
I have a Maxtor SATA HD (DiamondMax Plus 9) that has crashed and I'm trying to hook it up to a PC (running XP Home) to try some recovery programs on it, and I'm running into a problem.

When I hook it up to my PC before booting, the BIOS recognizes the drive, but XP does not. So I've tried Hot Swapping it after booting up, and XP recognizes it, and the HD appears under my Hardware listing (under system) but after about 30 seconds XP freezes up completely. I've tried the HD on a friends PC and had the same sort of trouble (although when we booted up with the HD already attached his XP would freeze before loading where mine was not recognizing the HD at all). Does anyone know what XP does right after it recognizes the HD? What would cause XP to freeze up?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!
