Default Qimonda Samples GDDR5

Quote:
Memory manufacturer Qimonda claims to have started producing the worlds first 512MB GDDR5 chips. Like past GDDR revisions, GDDR5 increases the maximum bandwidth between a graphics processor and the graphics memory. GDDR5 boasts a whopping 20GB/s bandwidth, up from the GDDR4 bandwidth of 16GB/s. Qimonda claims that GDDR5 improves power consumption by downclocking unused VRAM. Qimonda will release their GDDR5 RAM "sometime in 2008". You can read the full Qimonda GDDR5 briefing here.

Wow, technology moves too freakin fast!

Why do they keep spending all the money to research stuff only to dump it in a month?

Why not save up a buttload of money and research something revolutionary, that will dominate for years to come?

To stay competitive in the Semiconductor DRAM industry you have to produce bigger better and faster to compete with other competitors. Qimonda's biggest competitor right now is Micron, but Micron is dominating the market because Qimonda's Richmond 300mm fab is having problems producing chips and Infineon, Qimonda's parent company is selling all of their shares of Qimonda stock to cut all ties with the company. Therefore, Qimonda has to keep producing just to stay competitive.
