There was a movie before that which showed it.

The Recruit (2003)

The Recruit 2003. Bridget Moynahan uses a USB Thumb Drive enclosed in the bottom of a Coffe Mug to steal a program from the CIA.

Wont stop the theft. There is always other ways. Micro SD cards in phones can hold a lot of info as well.....:rolleyes:

One way to help deter any thefts is to have everyone under constant surveilance while they are present. You know that won't happen as well as banning personal cell phones as well as other means.
