Question Mechanism of Print Screen

Does anyone one know the mechanism by which Print Screen Works. That is, when you press the Print Screen key (or PrtSc) from where in the computer does the data that is suppose to be on the monitor come from. It is stored on the clipboard, but what is the origin of that data? Is the display frame buffer read somehow or is there a software buffer somewhere that was used to write the data into the display frame buffer and that is what is interrogated?
