Default Vista Reading four gigs of ram

Hey I just bought four gigabytes of ram for my rig and it only reads it as 3.25 is there something special I need to do for it to read four gigs of ram, or is it just vista doesn't support that much ram because I have the 32 bit version.

So does it slow down my computer having the extra ram?

No, because it will still use far more than the 2gb that you would have with 2 sticks.
