Hi,
I think this one is easy, but just in case, let me ask:

I am having soundcard problems (PCI Express card on Win XP), and I downloaded an updated driver from the makers website.

When I go to uninstall the current sound drivers, I see several sound devices under device manager, such as audio codecs, legacy audio controlers, and "Gamsorround Muse LT Audio device".

This last one is the only one I need to remove before install the newer one?

Usually if you download an updated driver, you can just install it without removing anything.

But if that fails, download DriverCleaner and that will clear everything out for you.
