SATA boot disk freezing system and not being recognised

Hey there. I have bought a (second hand) hard drive: a SATA Hitachi 7K160 drive and once connected to the motherboard via the SATA cable, on start tp there are some soft but repetitive noises in the drive which freezes the system for about two minutes then the machine continues and cannot detect the drive. Have i missed something or is this definitely a busted drive?

Its not in RAID, so i understand that this will be detected as an IDE drive? I am using a WINFAST 6100M2MA mobo.

PS, this is the only drive on the system and so there is no OS installed on a different disk and i have no other SATA system to check it with.
