are you connecting via dvi or vga? also, have you tried it on any other pc's?
Are you connecting directly from dvi-to-dvi, vga-to-vga, or dvi-adapter-vga ?
have you tried both dvi, and vga seperately, and with a dvi adapter?
and lastly, what video card are you using for it?

read what resolutions your videocard can support. Even my video card (Radeon 9600SE) doesn't support widescreen either. I hate the stretched out image anyways on widescreen.

im connecting via vga, well my graphics card (in my sig) is an originally dvi, but i got a converter with it to do dvi to vga. (so dvi-adapter-vga)
my old computer (the only other computer i've tried it on) had a agp video card with vga.

well my video card's max resolution is 2560 x 1600..

problem fixed...turns out only one of my dvi's on my video card does not work. weird.

but anyway, my widescreen also had a dvi connector soooooo yeah.
