Default Mic Hiss

Hi,

When I unmute my mic and have the boost on I get alot of hiss then when I mute with the mic pluged in or not I got no hiss then unmute then the hiss comes back. I have tryed different mics I can't put the gain on any more because the hissing is bad.

How can I reduce the hissing with the boost thanks

Windows Media Center
3.40GHZ
2GB DDR2
SB X-Fi Sound Card

I'm trying to use a mic like they do in radio mic stand over the head coming down infront of face but when I set this up the mic isn't picking the voice up then when I boost I get really bad hissing in the background the most I boost the more louder the hissing is.

Thanks
