It should ask what type of project you want to print,When choosing there should be a bunch of different option's,I have the same all in one but i haven't had it hooked up for a good while so i can't really remember

When you go to file and print you can go to the printers properties and most likely select only to print in black.

Do you want to turn the color off because its empty?? If so alot of printers won't print at all unless both cartridges have ink.
