Default Laptop Screen goes blank

I'm having an issue with a Compaq 1700 laptop, which I know is older but it does what I need most of the time. Lately it has while being on for a while the screen goes blank, I can ususally force it down or remove the battery and it will come right back up. I'm not sure what the problem is. I mean if it was a heat problem I don't think I could start it up right away and it work.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Due to the age, it's probably just a sign of the laptop hardware wearing out. If you want to ensure that it's getting a good air flow, get some compressed air and blow the dust out of the inside. If you can take it apart safely and clean it that way all the better.

If that fails, try uninstalling and reinstalling your graphics drivers. If that doesn't work either, your last step may be to reinstall windows as well.

It does suck when old laptops die, if they lasted until the end of time we'd use them until then.

I repair Toshiba laptops daily, It's a quite common problem that is usually due to the FL (Flouresent Lamp) Inverter going bad. It's a small transformer board somewhere near the LCD. It most likely isn't the backlight that's bad, because the lamp is either blow, or it isn't.
