Question Laptop performance slow as a snail

My Amilo Pro V. 2010 laptop is as slow as ****. It is running Windows XP SP2 . What can I do to improve its performance?

Note: it wasn't always slow. Also, the hard drive seems to make its grinding sound for ages before anything opens. Could a 30 GB usage out of 37 GB available memory on my hard drive be causing this problem?

It is a 2005 model and has a 1.5GHZ processor

You should start backing up all your data that you want to keep it sounds like your hard drive is going to bite the dust. And a bad hard drive will slow your system down.
