laptop HD rescue

On my laptop yesterday when i opened it, i heard some roaring mettalic sounds from my HD (i have the toshiba MK-4021GAS
40GB 2.5inch HD) and system wouldnt boot correctly.
After many tries i gave up (i also booted from the windows cd to make use of the recovery console stuff) and purchased an enclosure, HD is in there now. My goal is to be able to retieve my data from the 2nd partition, on 1st partition i had Windows files. My data are located only in the 2nd partition, is there a way to retrive them?

Oh i forgot to mention that the hd in the enclosure is not accessible (its not shown in the mycomputer window) when i connect it to my desktop pc, neither can it be seen in management.

Can i use an app from a bootable disk to fix or retrieve my data? But then again the bad HD can only be on the enclosure so that i can transfer the files to the laptops HD.

Ive run out of ideas plz help!
