Default HP Laptop BROKEN

I partitioned the C drive (Windows XP) on it, to create a separate drive to run Linux from, which I labeled LINUX, and J drive. I installed all the linux things onto it, and reebooted the computer. It showed the HP screen as usual but then a flashing cursor and nothing else. After a frustrationg evening, I managed to wipe J drive and make a new one that would run XP. That worked, but XP was different (no sound, no programs, no wifi etc.) but luckily I could still access the documents on C. Strangelt, it appears to have wiped the old XP from the C drive, but I need it back. Any ideas (I tried 'repairing' it, but it lost it instead). I will give more details of the laptop asap.
