Default HDD random stops and reloading

Randomly when using the computer, all programs and OS will freeze and I can hear the hdd spinning and loading up for a few seconds then it returns to normal. It's a new caviar black and using windows 7 - could it be a faulty drive or is it a setting I need to change?
