Default Gateway Media Center

I have a friend that just bought a Gateway Media Center Running Vista. I am a little confused on the setup the HDCABLE goes into the receiver box then to the computer then from the COMPUTER to the TV using the HDCABLE but how does he watch TV and record things. Does he always have to watch TV threw the media center. Can you guys shed a little light on this? thanks!
