Default ext HD, xp, no detection!

Hi everyone.

Ok, here’s the deal. I bought an external laptop hard drive from a friend. It runs on USB and my friend says that on his all he does is plug it in and it works fine. 20 GB.

Now, I’m using xp. Shouldn’t it be detected as soon as it’s plugged in?

Why is this not the case? I plug the drive in, and absolutely nothing happens.

It works on my windows 98 BOMB of a computer, and so I’m wondering what the bleep is going on here? Isn’t xp specialised for things like this?

I would appreciate ANY help. Any questions, just ask.

Thank you to all in advance.

Im sure you have tried doing this :

Have you tried another USB port ?
Do you have any errors in your Device Manager ?
Have you updated your USB controller Drivers ?
Are you on an Admin account ?

I’m pretty sure the external drive is getting power. It works fine on my Windows 98 computer...

I have installed the drivers that came with it on a CD...

I’ve tried another USB port. Anyway, I’m pretty sure this one works... I use it often.

Yes I do have errors in my Device Manager! Next to a “USB Mass Storage Drive”...???

Updated my USB controller Drivers? Plz explain...

Yes. I am admin. This is the only account on this computer.

b/c It works fine on your 98 machine... It leads me to believe that its just a Driver Issue. What kind of drive is it ?

Do you have any options if you select the error icon in the DM ?

The drive is a 2.5” External sub-system drive. A laptop portable drive my friend calls it.

There is a port on the back which says USB2.0 which I plug into.

When I select the error, there are the options to update driver, uninstall and that’s pretty much it...
