Default DVD drive not reading some DVDs

I have an Acer 1680 notebook that came with a "QSI CDRW / DVD SBW-242c".

It has gotten to where it won't read certain DVDs. It will detect that a disc has been inserted and will start spinning and searching, but can never pick up anything.

Whatever is causing it was consistent with various discs. Some will play fine, others play laggy, while others will not play at all. That made me think it had something to do with the disc format, but now some of the discs that used to play won't play anymore.

I decided to try a firmware upgrade but couldn't find the 242c. All I could find was 242, and since I was tired of messing with it I went ahead and tried it. It didn't mess anything up but it didn't fix anything either.

Acer won't help because apparently the warranty is already out and I'm getting to the point of probably having to just buy a new drive. I'd just like to know if there's anything I can do before I spend more money on this thing. Thanks.

maybe the lense is dirty?

other than that, keep looking for a firmware upgrade for the newer disks it can't play...

Are these movie DVD's or like DVD-R data discs?

I have cleaned the lense already.
These are store-bought DVD Movies.
CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs read and burn fine.
