Default Dell Optiplex GX280 Fan Issue

We have a few GX280's sitting around that have a fan issue. Not all of them are consistant, the one I"m working on now for example only does it intermittenly. The issue is, upon booting the computer, the LED in the power button will be orange, and the CPU fan will climb in RPM's until it's maxed out. I've read online that the heatsink is insufficient for this particular P4 processor (Prescott?). I was wondering if anyone has replaced this heatsink and successfully eliminated this noise, I'm nervous to order a heatsink and have it not even work :| Thanks for the help!~

Default Re: Dell Optiplex GX280 Fan Issue

Hello,

The issue with Dell's is that the heatsink is mounted in such a way that it is held down by clips on the mobo. Now getting a after market heatsink will not mount this way and the way the dell mobo's are mounted there is no way to use a heatsink that mounts thru the mobo.

So your best option would be to see if Dell has a replacement heatsink.

Cheers,
Mak
