Well you can get like Seagate Tools or the Western Digital Tools to test the drive. They are available on their site. I also have them in the Windows Sticky thread entitled Read First under the topic called Recommened Software for Certain Tasks.
Those should be able to test the drive out for you. Now about the HDD not being seen, is it not seen by the BIOS or by Windows?
